Time is a wasting, dreams are now reality; music recording software is FREE, but don’t wait because it could end soon.
The best news in the last century for musicians, after the advent of the record player, is home digital recording software that eliminates the need to pay for use of a professional studio. Now everybody can get their own home recording studio. Not just free, but there is music software in the thousands, which is user friendly. There is something for everybody, for every reason you record, and everything you want to accomplish with the recorded material.
This article covers a basic overview of music recording software without going into detail on what each does. You are better off to start looking for what you want the software to do, then seeing which types will have that capability.
Following is a list of some things you can do or create with various types of software.

Here is a basic look at some available recording software
Audacity and similar ones that will do multiple track and stereo.  Good for vocal only, as a learning tool, or for a rehearsal track, and entirely Free -- You may discover other uses for the free software beyond the above.
Adobe Audition, and other 2 track software for editing.  Perfect for making an original library of sound effects, recording live group performances, or anytime you require stereo capability. Also used to master a CD for pressing copies.
Loop Programs: If you are not an instrumentalist or musically trained, these allow you to make music with sound loops; some commonly used include Garage Band for Mac, Acid Pro for PC, and Ableton for Mac or PC.
Software for changing and stretching notes and tempo of vocals or instruments:  This capability is found in Celemony Melodyne, a fairly new product.  They have a free demo and it goes up from there--can be pricey.  Thought to be a good add on, because other programs generally don’t allow you to change pitch, and even change the actual melody of a track.
Complete recording systems used in studios worldwide, which you can also use in your own home.  With this level of equipment, you can record and mix over 150 tracks.  You will be investing real money here.  The most frequently used of this type include Pro Tools (Digidesign for Mac or PC), which does have a free trial version, Cubase Steinberg (Mac or PC), Logic Audio (Mac), and Cakewalk Sonar (PC).
Don’t get too concerned about cost until you specify your needs There are so many free downloads, if you include free trials, that you will be amazed at the power of it. For those of us who came up before computers, it is no less than a dream come true that we can now record with such wonderful sound quality, in some cases by simply buying a good computer and adding software for free.
