Rural Resident Eligibility for the Broadband Recovery Act

By

The U.S. Government gave a boost to the economy through the 2011 Internet Recovery Act Program. One of the many projects is the Broadband Initiatives Program, which let’s some rural residents subscribe to satellite Internet at a reduced price.

For those that are eligible, they get reduced monthly fees, free equipment leasing and installation, plus a number of other benefits under the Broadband Initiatives Program. The reduced monthly rate will remain the same for as long as the individual subscribes to the service.

While the government’s effort to stimulate the economy in rural areas is greatly welcome, some rural residents are finding that they don’t qualify for the Broadband Initiative Program. Restrictions on eligibility were put in place, since there are obviously limits to what the government and satellite Internet ISPs can offer.

Eligibility requires that you not

*Already subscribe to rural satellite Internet

*Have previously subscribed to rural satellite Internet

*Have the ability to subscribe to other broadband services from a phone or cable company

*Reside in a rural area being served by a RUS or NTIA loan or grant award

In order to qualify for the Broadband Recovery Act you must

*Live in a designated rural area

*Use dial-up Internet to get online

*Pass a credit check (unless you live in Vermont)

*Commit to a 12-month satellite Internet contract

Different satellite Internet ISP for different regions

Normally, you get to pick which satellite Internet ISP you want to go with. However, if you want to take advantage of the pricing under the Broadband Initiative Program, you may not have a choice. The government established zones for each of the satellite Internet providers. Contact a satellite Internet ISP to find out if you are eligible.
